Proteas wait on Albie Morkel injury

All-rounder could be a doubt for South Africa's tournament opener with a back injury

17 September 2012 - 09:52pm IST

South Africa will check on Albie Morkel’s back on Tuesday after he sustained a problem during Monday’s ICC World T20 warm-up victory over New Zealand.

The all-rounder was hampered by an ankle injury during the recent tour of England but arrived in Sri Lanka hoping to play a full part in his team’s WT20 campaign.

Morkel hurt his back during a brief knock of 15 not out off four balls and was then forced to leave the field during the New Zealand innings after bowling just nine deliveries.

South Africa Team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: “He (Morkel) first felt the pain when he hit the six while he was batting, but he thought that it was something minor. He aggravated it while he was bowling and came off as a precautionary measure to receive treatment from our physio, Brandon Jackson.

“We will see how he does overnight, if he doesn’t improve substantially by tomorrow (Tuesday) morning he will have to have an MRI scan.”

South Africa’s first match takes place on Thursday against Zimbabwe in Hambantota.
