Edwards aims to make amends for Caribbean experience

England women's team captain hopes to redeem the team's 2010 loss in West Indies

England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards is looking to banish the memories of ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2010 when the next edition gets underway in Sri Lanka.

Going to the West Indies as reigning champions, England failed to get out of the group stage as Australia claimed the title.

Edwards is philosophical about her team’s 2010 defeat to the hosts, which ultimately cost them a place in the semi-finals.

"That’s cricket,” Edwards told ecb.co.uk before heading to Sri Lanka. “I’ve played cricket for a number of years and, as I’ve said to the girls, I’ve had many highs and lows. That was a huge low, but it is not something I think too much about in terms of thinking about what went wrong."

England lost its last T20I before departing for the sub-continent – also against West Indies - but that was preceded by victory in its previous 19 completed T20I matches.

In total, England has lost just four T20I matches since the last Women’s World Twenty20. England’s skipper believes the defeat in Basseterre ultimately had a positive impact on the squad.

“That was the turning point for us as a team, so I only see it as a positive now,” said Edwards. “We’ve moved on and it’s good that it hurts."

“It really hurt a lot of these players and hopefully some of that hurt has come out in some of our performances over the last 18 months."

“We really want to put things right and we are going in the right direction at the moment.” England play a warm-up match against South Africa in Colombo on Saturday (September 22) ahead of its first Group A match with Pakistan on September 27.
