Women’s warm-ups: New Zealand beats India

It was the last of the four warm-up matches scheduled for the eight teams participating in the women’s chapter of the ICC World Twenty20 2012 – India versus New Zealand. And New Zealand joined the list of winners, getting the better of India by four wickets at Nondescripts Cricket Club after putting together a dominant performance first with the ball and then with the bat.

Amita Sharma, opening the batting for India, was the best of the lot as she scored a patient 39-ball 32 with four hits to the fence. Only Harmanpreet Kaur, with 20, and Jhulan Goswami, who hit 14 from 14 balls batting at No. 5, reached double figures in the Indian batting effort as India folded up for 100 in 19.4 overs.

From New Zealand’s point of view, Frances Mackay was the most successful, returning figures of 3 for 13, while Sophie Devine picked up two wickets.

Chasing the small target, New Zealand’s reply was driven by Suzie Bates, who took New Zealand to the doorstep of victory before retiring out for 51. Bates’s innings spanned just 39 balls and was studded with six fours and a six.

Mackay also got a good hit, retiring on a 34-ball 21, while Sara McGlashan was the other contributor for New Zealand, scoring an unbeaten 10-ball 13. New Zealand overtook the Indian total in 18.1 overs for the loss of six wickets.
